It is located next to the Castle, which is under the jurisdiction of Megistis Lavras Monastery, of Agio Oros and was founded by Saint Athanasios of Athos, with the assistance of the Byzantine Emperor, Nikiforos Fokas, in 963 A.d.
The monastery was renovated in the 16th century, and is currently one of the most important places of worship of St. George’s in Greece.
Fully operational until 2001 when it suffered extensive damage due to an earthquake. This forced its closure to the public until 2015. Restoration was completed by Father Geonidos.
St. George is the patron saint of Skyros Island and his name day is on the 23rd of April.
