According to the legend, an ancient Acropolis and King Lycomides’s Palace was located on this mountain. During the Roman and Byzantine times, the castle was protected and  fortified.

Between 1204 until 1537 Skyros was under Venetian control. It was conquered by Hayreddin Barbarossa, on behalf of the Ottomans and because neither the Venetians nor the Ottomans had any interest in the castle, it remained unchanged, and was not maintained during this period.

The castle was a refuge for the local Skyrians from pirate invasions until the 19th century, when it was abandoned. Its last permanent resident, the last bishop of Skyros, passed away in 1827.

From 2001 till 2019, visiting the castle was not permitted due to damage that occurred  during the earthquake, of 2001.
